About George McClure: A Free-Wheeling Businessman, Family Man, and Race Car Driver

George McClure was a man of many talents and accomplishments. He served his country honorably in the United States Army and the South Carolina National Guard before settling in Walterboro to open the Shell Station in 1956. A natural leader, his shop became a gathering spot for young men and his guidance helped raise many young men to become successful members of the community.

In the 1970s, George opened McClure’s Garage & Wrecker Service behind his house, growing and nurturing it alongside his family and community to where it is today. Over the years, he drag raced his 1955 Chevy at area tracks, winning numerous trophies and accolades. He was known as "Top Dog" at the drag strip, and he never backed down from a challenge. His commitment to helping others and doing things right was evident in all aspects of his life.

Today, McClure’s Garage & Wrecker Service continues to honor George’s legacy by providing top-quality automobile recovery, mechanic, and performance services to its clients. We remain a family-driven business that is committed to serving our community with honesty, integrity, and excellence.
